Legislative Monitoring & Advocacy
Our continual scrutiny of state and federal regulatory activities keeps members current. VHCA position papers and policy statements are presented regularly to legislators and before legislative and regulatory bodies.
Pertinent facts are explained, summarized and passed on to members in a timely fashion via newsletter, fax, e-mail or regular mail.
Several registered on-staff lobbyists create the core of VHCA’s coordinated advocacy network. Members are provided information in order to develop their political awareness and are encouraged to participate in grassroots advocacy.
Each winter while the General Assembly is in session, VHCA sponsors a Legislative Reception that offers members the opportunity to meet face-to-face with state legislators and other government officials in a congenial atmosphere.
Meetings & Professional Development
The VHCA Annual Convention and Trade Show, by far the largest and
most comprehensive event of its kind in Virginia, brings together the
people, education, products and services essential to the continued
growth and success of quality long term care.
The Legislative Conference, scheduled while the General Assembly is in
session, provides a forum for members, regulatory agencies and elected
officials to exchange ideas and concerns about the issues critical to
long term care.
Education
Every VHCA seminar carries the approval of the National Association of Board of Examiners (NAB) for administrators. Seminars are offered at both of our statewide events and at individual free standing programs across Virginia for members’ convenience. More than 165 hours of accredited training are available to members each year.
Highly qualified speakers present seminars that address a full continuum of educational needs, including LTC regulations, reimbursement, management, subacute care, dementia, managed care, Assisted Living and CCRC-specific issues and more.
As a member, your VHCA-sponsored continuing education credits are recorded in our database for easy verification of attendance. Reports are issued upon request. Members may attend informative education throughout the year at member rates – one-third the cost charged non-members. Attendance at select annual events such as the convention & trade show and legislative conference is limited to members only.
SMART
The VHCA Survey Management Analysis & Resource Tool (SMART), is provided to VHCA members as a resource tool. Members may use this tool to view and analyze current trends and patterns in the nursing facility survey process. Detailed information about survey results for facilities and regions is available in statewide and custom comparison reports for a range of metrics and across user specified date ranges.
Communications & Public Relations
VHCA public relations efforts increase the public’s awareness of the excellent care residents receive in member facilities. This communication also educates the public about expanded services and the importance of appropriate care.
Valuable online and print publications available to members include the weekly eMEMO (MEMO in print format) filled with regulatory, payment, legislative, association, education and other important news. Long term care news from the American Health Care Association, including federal regulatory and Congressional activity, is also supplied directly to all VHCA members. The VCAL eFocus (FOCUS in print format), a newsletter of assisted living-specific topics, is published monthly.
Statewide programs such as the Administrators and Volunteers of the Year, Community Involvement Awards and national events like National Nursing Home Week and Assisted Living Week are developed and encouraged in an effort to support, expand and acknowledge the contributions of VHCA members.
District Involvement
Members in six geographic areas across Virginia meet regularly at VHCA District Meetings to advance their common interests. Non-profit facilities and for profits, religiously affiliated and secular, small and large, private and government supported, all join together to discuss their mutual concerns. Corporate Associate members (area vendor representatives) often attend meetings and support the efforts of Administrators.
Districts elect their own full slate of officers. Each District is represented on the Virginia Health Care Association Board of Directors.
Committees
As a VHCA member you are eligible to participate on the various committees and task forces. Committee and task force involvement allows members the opportunity to directly impact the future of long term care by introducing and shaping ideas.
Some of the issues addressed by VHCA committees include quality of care, regulations, payment and reimbursement, health planning, assisted living, convention and trade show, and nurse scholarships.
Facility membership in VHCA provides concurrent membership in the American Health Care Association - the national organization for long term care providers.
