ICYMI: ALFs Need to Ensure Dementia Patients Are Not Left Out of Activities

A recent article in HealthDay reports, “U.S. assisted living facilities often have activities to keep seniors socially engaged,” but research indicates “they need to ensure that residents with dementia are not left out.” After observing “residents and staff at four assisted living communities over the course of a year,” the study team “found that a few factors stood out as key to keeping residents with dementia socially and mentally engaged day to day.” For example, “getting to know the residents as people – and not only dementia patients – was ‘foundational,’” the study revealed. The findings were published online in the Journals of Gerontology Series B.
